Principal Investigators: Heather Gray, PhD & Debi LaPlante, PhD
Funder: Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Office of Problem Gambling Services via Health Resources in Action
In its second collaboration with Health Resources in Action (HRiA), the Division on Addiction will support the Project Build Up initiative to strengthen the capacity of the Massachusetts behavioral health workforce to promote and provide gambling treatment services to communities of color, particularly Asian-American communities. During the period February-June 2021, the Division on Addiction will be subcontracted to collaboratively develop a guide to be used during key informant interviews. Key informant interviews will cover topics related to the needs of Asian-Americans who might be experiencing gambling-related problems, barriers to engaging Asian-Americans in formal treatment for gambling-related problems, and how to support local organizations in their efforts to better serve the Asian-American community.
The Division on Addiction will support the development of Learning Academy sessions for Massachusetts-based providers who wish to learn more about promoting and providing problem gambling services to Asian-American clients. A Learning Academy on-demand video library of interviews with experts on gambling in Asian culture, treatment strategies for Asian American populations, and gambling among Asian-American immigrants will also be developed. The Division on Addiction will study the results of Learning Academy evaluations to determine what worked well and areas for improvement.
