Understanding Fantasy Sports

An Evidence-based Approach to Understanding Daily Fantasy Sports Activities

Principal Investigators: Debi LaPlante, PhD & Howard Shaffer, PhD, CAS
Funder: DraftKings, Inc.
Timeline: 2016 – 2021

The Division will conduct a 5-year research study on responsible and problematic fantasy sports activities. Division researchers will conduct a robust set of studies related to identifying characteristics and behaviors of daily fantasy players, providing the evidence necessary to promote responsible play and responsible gaming resources, and determine the feasibility of developing a predictive algorithm for detecting problem play patterns among daily fantasy players. The Division will disseminate its materials and findings via academic publications, The Transparency Project, and educational activities (i.e., trainings) targeting employees, public health stakeholders, and the public at-large. This study of online fantasy sports is the first to use actual player records, providing much needed information about this burgeoning new area of gaming.
